Building Trust Partnership (Police-Community Relations) - Internship

The Kroc IPJ is seeking a part-time, paid intern to support the institute’s “Building Trust Partnership” (BTP) Initiative which seeks to improve police-community relations by working with religious leaders from all faith backgrounds. This position affords the opportunity to work in close cooperation with the program staff and to gain insight into how to develop, design, manage and implement a domestic peacebuilding project. The summer will be an exciting time to work on the project as the Kroc IPJ will be in Phase II of the project, actively building a community of practice of San Diego religious leaders and supporting them in the development and execution of community-focused projects which bring police and community members together.

Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Project Design: Thinking about, developing, and designing new activities as part of the project’s Phase II;
  • Outreach: Identifying and contacting potential partners to join the project and attending meetings with these individuals to discuss the project;
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Developing and monitoring different metrics to evaluate how well the project is meeting its objectives and creating impact;
  • Event Logistics: Coordinating with speakers, inviting participants, securing venues, and making additional arrangements for event activities;
  • Communications: Utilizing social media to raise awareness about the Building Trust Partnership and promote project activities;
  • Development: Assisting with the development of project documents, identifying potential funders, developing grant proposals, etc.
  • Admin: Other administrative tasks as necessary
This paid internship will be approximately 15 hours per week. Hours worked are flexible, but will primarily take place during regular office hours (9-5).

This internship can be completed for academic credit under course code PJS 498 as part of the Kroc School’s Peacebuilding and Social Innovation Minor or to satisfy general elective credit.

Qualifications:
  • Experience working with law enforcement and/or community organizing with specific experience working on police-community relations
  • Experience planning and executing events
  • Familiarity with social media including Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Demonstrated research, writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interest in peacebuilding and community relations
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Learning Outcomes:
  • Experience with project management, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Exposure to real-world issues like police-community relations and the role of religious leaders
  • Development of research, writing and analytical skills with support from program staff
  • Development of social media skills and communication strategies
  • Exposure to and opportunity to connect with the IPJ’s San Diego partners
  • Deeper understanding of how to develop, design, manage and implement projects
